Short description

The new Sewing and repair- Café will be established within the premises (Wohnoase) of the “Peoples Aid Upper Austria” in Freistadt. This project aims to promote the responsible use of resources rather than supporting a throwaway mentality. Small devices and clothes can be repaired by following the given step-by-step instructions.

The Sewing and repair- Café will be open on every second Saturday in the month from 2 to 5 pm.  Various tools as well as sewing machines are put at the disposal for the participants. There will be no possibility to repair large-scale equipment as washing machines, refrigerators etc.

Point of departure

The “Peoples Aid Upper Austria” in Freistadt has recently noticed that several people are supporting the idea of a more sustainable lifestyle in terms of repairing things rather than throwing them away. Furthermore, the organization has frequently been requested to repair small devices, bicycles or clothes at low costs. One major objective is to establish a network for repair workshops on a regional level in order to extend the lifetime and durability of the various products by repairing them. Competent and experienced craftsmen will be involved into this project and will be present at the Sewing and repair- Café (established within the premises of the “Wohnoase”) in Freistadt. Furthermore, the integration of asylum-seekers can be seen an intercultural benefit for all participants.

Targets and target groups

The Sewing and repair- Café shall be seen as a meeting place for people who are highly committed to an environmentally sustainable lifestyle and whose financial situation is relatively limited.

Results and effects

The Sewing and Repair-Café has been opening its doors every second Saturday of the month, from 2 to 5 pm, since the beginning of 2016.
