Short description

  • Exemption from timber use of 400 biotope trees distributed over the entire European nature reserve (Lainzer Tiergarten nature reserve).

  • Habitat measure: protection of individual trees, breeding cavities, veteran trees and nest trees.

The initiative complies with the objectives of the Habitats Directive, the Austrian Biodiversity Strategy 2020 and the Vienna Nature Conservation Act:

  • Safeguarding biodiversity through the conservation of natural habitats and wildlife in Europe.
  • Preserving the largely pristine and unspoilt Viennese landscape.

Point of departure

The Lainzer Tiergarten nature reserve, located on the outskirts of the city, is one last piece of ancient Viennese forest.

The size of the Lainzer Tiergarten and the area of biotope trees exempted from timber use amounts to approx. 2,000 hectares.

The area is managed and conserved in accordance with forest ecology by the Forestry Department of the City of Vienna.

Several forest communities are concerned, predominantly Carpinetum and Fagetum.

Targets and target groups

For many decades, this unique area for recreation has been a popular destination for people from the city as well as for tourists.

Thanks to the unique cultural and natural landscape, the rich flora and fauna as well as the cultural-historical exhibitions in the Hermes Villa, the Lainzer Tiergarten nature reserve is an ideal place to combine leisure, outdoor activities and education.
