Short description

In Tyrol there are about 2600 wood grouse. These occurrences belong to the most important in the Alps. Nevertheless, this bird species is considered endangered in Tyrol. With a dedicated action plan, the province of Tyrol, in cooperation with the University of Innsbruck and the Tyrolean Hunters' Association have established a monitoring programme. In an educational offensive, the forestry, hunting and nature conservation personnel were made familiar with the habitat requirements of the wood grouse. Within the framework of the forest environment measures of the rural development programme, a number of measures were created to improve the habitat: thinning to dense forest stands; conversion of dense old stands into well-structured, unevenly aged stands; avoidance of disturbance; retention of sleeping and mating trees; making fences visible; promotion of berry bushes; retention of deadwood.

17 projects for improving the habitat of the wood grouse are currently running in Tyrol.

Applicants are municipalities, agricultural communities and forest maintenance associations.
